What to think about before you decide to renovate your home
If you love your home but you it is stating to look a bit dated, then it is likely that you are thinking of renovating. If so, here is a list of things you should think about before go ahead with your renovation.
1. WHAT DO YOU WANT RENOVATED?
This is especially important if you only have a budget to renovate one room at a time. For example, if you love cooking and spend lots of time in your outdated kitchen, then getting a renovated kitchen is likely to be your priority. However, if you love entertaining outdoors, then a new deck and even alfresco kitchen might be where you want to spend your budget on.
You may also have an older style home with no ensuite bathroom. If this is the case, then getting that second bathroom might be where your budget goes to.
2. WILL YOU HAVE TO MOVE OUT DURING THE RENOVATION?
This is important to think about if you are on a tight budget. Deciding to move out during a renovation also depends on what you are getting renovated. For example, if you only have one bathroom and you want to renovate it, then it is more likely that you will want to move out whilst the renovations are taking place.
3. WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?
Once you have worked out what areas of your home you would like renovated and whether you need to factor in the cost of accommodation you need to think about your budget.
You need to remember to take into account the costs that are in addition to the actual costs of the construction. This includes things like appliances, new furniture, carpets and lighting fixtures.
4. HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT STORAGE REQUIREMENTS?
Storage requirements are quite often forgotten when a renovation is being done. However, lack of storage is quite often a reason for deciding on a renovation in the first place. Often, if you think about your storage requirements at the start of your renovation project, you can find some really innovative ways to get that little bit of extra space.
5. HAVE YOU VISUALISED HOW YOU WANT YOUR RENOVATED ROOM TO LOOK LIKE?
The more you think about how your room should look like at the start, the easier the process will be. For example if you are renovating your kitchen, think about whether you have a preferred brand of appliances you want to use.
In addition, if you already know things like what type of sink and even taps you want, then there will be a lot less decisions to make later on. Also, don’t forget about what colour paint as well lighting you want, as it is quite often these elements that create ambience in a room.
