timber decking melbourne

Various types of timbers are used to build decks. This includes natural timber. A popular choice of natural timber for decking is merbau. However, other types include spotted gum, ironbark, and jarrah.

composite decking melbourne

Composite decking is also becoming an increasingly popular form of decking. This is because it is low maintenance and in some cases environmentally friendly when it is made from recycled materials.

In particular, in recent years, it has developed the warm and natural look of timber – rather than the look of plastic. Composite decking is particularly favoured for around swimming pools.

However, it is also considered an environmentally friendly choice. This is especially true if the composite timber is made out of recycled materials. Some composite decking is even made out of used plastic milk bottles.

How to get started with your new deck

When it comes to building your new deck there are so many options. This is great as it means you are able to design your deck just the way you want. However, it does mean you have lots of decisions!.

Here are just a few of things you need to think about:

1. COMPOSITE AND TIMBER DECK?

Both composite and timber decking provide benefits. For example, if you want to be environmentally friendly then composite decking using recycled plastic may be the way to go. Once you have made the decision to go with either composite decking or traditional timber decking there are still lots of options.

For example, timber decks come in a range of different timbers. The most popular is merbau. This timber has a lovely orange-brown colour, which develops a deeper red colour as it ages. In addition, other popular timbers include jarrah and spotted gum.

2. IS SHADE REQUIRED?

Given Melbourne’s variable weather it is important to consider shade for your deck. This is not just for protection from hot Melbourne summers but also it’s wet winters. If you decide on a pergola then you need to think about whether you want all of your deck protected or only part.

3. WOULD YOU LIKE AN ALFRESCO KITCHEN?

Alfresco kitchens are becoming a more common feature in Melbourne backyards. If you decide on an alfresco kitchen you have lots of choices. You can have a built in BBQ or even pizza oven in your alfresco kitchen. In addition, you can have a built in sink and bar fridge.

Storage is often overlooked in outdoor kitchens, but it is important if you don’t want to keep having to running inside to collect utensils etc.

4. ARE YOU ON A SLOPING BLOCK?

If you have a sloping block there are extra decisions to make. This includes the use of steps down to the rest of your backyard. A sloping block also gives you the opportunity to use the underside of your deck as a storage space.

5. VIEWS OR PRIVACY?

If your new deck affords you with great views then the last thing you want is to block it with bulky balustrades. If you need balustrades for safety reasons then consider steel wire or even glass.

Conversely, if you need privacy as the neighbours can see straight into your new deck then privacy screening is the way to go.

6. THINKING ABOUT SPECIAL FEATURES?

This is where you can make your new deck truly your own. Some things to consider include inbuilt benches. These are a great choice, especially if space is limited, as you can have them built with storage facilities. If you want to use your deck during Melbourne’s cold winters then an inbuilt fireplace is a great idea.

As well, it makes a great feature that adds that wow factor. If you are looking to take relaxation to the next level why not consider an in built spa for your new deck.
